Being a member of
the orchestra was a highlight of my school days. I love music and still remember
the fun we had at rehearsals and then the goose bumps the night of the performances.
We practiced on the third floor "band room" and recently I made the trek

we go. Remember the loooong marches on Memorial Day through downtown and
up Madison Hill to the cemetery and back, and how in some years this occurred
after the all-night junior-senior prom? How empty life would be without

I was so lucky to be part of a great band. Will never forgot my first band practice as a freshman in 1957. Being a 3rd chair, the clarinets sat right in front of the drums. We were playing a Puccini intro where the band would march out as a straight line. The drummers crashed their sticks onto their drums and I screamed. Well, that stopped everything, and I will never forget the look on Mr. Emig's face as he started to laugh. What a wonderful man. Would still love to be in a marching band.

Music will always be an important part of my life thanks to Jack Emig and Bill Shepherd. I had a great time in band and worked hard. I made some wonderful friends and am still very close to one in particular. Jack Emig and Bill Shepherd helped shape my future. They expected nothing less than perfection. Ten
years after graduation I met and married a guy who was a drummer
for Wadsworth High whikle I was at Wooster! Our daughter ended up
going to high school and college in Arizona and played the same
clarinet I used while she was in her school bands. Someone once
told my mother, while I was in high school, that all the nicest
and warmest kids were in music programs. I found that to be true
for my own daughter too! It was nice to find this page with the

I
think I was either last chair or close to it but loved being in
the "in" crowd. I marched ten yards the wrong direction
at a football game halftime show. How embarrasing! I remember
band members losing shoes in the mud during one rainy halftime
and another one losing his pants and not bothering to pick them
up. He marched right out of them - he had shorts on underneath,
luckily. I was a wallflower in high school, the only group I fit
into was the band. It was great.

crisp evennings before each football game, the crackling of

years spent in WHS bands, I also played in the Wooster Jaycee Band and Terry
Gardner's dance band. In fact, I was one of Terry's original players along
with Carmer, Cotterman, Moore, Walters, and Young. I never attended school
dances for the dancing as I was always a player. Presently I am a member
of the Golf Coast Flute Choir of Manatee County. Since I live near Sarasota
during the winter, I enjoy playing in an all-flute band of about thirty.
We perform various concerts around the Manatee County area. I quite fondly

teacher. Every evening for 45 minutes he worked with me. I still play my

The band was
the best. We had diamond drills, toe lights, head lights, black lights, fire
batons. Marching was an art that every member took pride in. Never were two
home games the same show, even if there were 4 home games in a row. Never
was there a "hole" or a line that wasn't straight. My highlight was a Disney
show complete with fireworks. We even had to physically move 2 cars. That
and the 1812 Overture.

Ten years later
and band is STILL most of my best memories from high school. Symphonic Band
fostered a love for music in that I still indulge in to this day. I am a
member of the Callanwolde Concert Band (www.calcb.org) and hope that all
the alumni that treasure their band experience have found a group like this.

Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and another as composer-in-residence for the Albuquerque

I think back fondly on my years
of being an orch dork at WHS thanks to the skill and commitment of Dan Adams,
the other members
of the music department, and of course my fellow orch dork friends. I would
also like to say that in retrospect, Dan did an awesome job finding interesting
and fitting music for such a wide range of skill levels while at the same time
conducting many other groups and teaching various classes. Hopefully sometime
in the future (when money for the arts is not on the wane, whenever and if
ever that may be) more attention will be given to the development
of the WHS orchestra. However, in relation to other high school orchestras,
and some college orchestras I would like to applaud the WHS orchestra for remaining

Upon moving to NYC
a little over a year and a half ago to pursue my dream of performance, I
have come to appreciate and respect what the teachers in the WHS Music Department
do day after day to help guide us and to make us better musicians and performers.
I am truly thankful for the Music Theory class that was offered, even if
it was very difficult for me at the time. I use it every day of my life and
am still learning a great deal. Also I am thankful for the endless sigh treading
exercises in choir - UGH. It was honestly a pain at the time, but as I am
auditioning all the time for musicals, I have seen the impact it can have.
Pursuing a career in the music world is not an easy thing to do, but with
the help of talented teachers at Wooster I have had a HUGE push in the right

Football season
was my favorite time of the year because of marching band. I absolutely loved
it! I was in Flag Corps for 3 years and Captain my senior year. Being a part

I'm in our college marching band right now, and I love it. The only bad thing is that it is a glide-stepping band, and I prefer the chair step. I still to this day have Mr. Bennett in the back of my head yelling at me for being lazy and not marching properly. As i write this, i can remember
all of the good and the bad. It was the end of the biggest part of my life
it was the end.
there will be no more nights to spend on follis field, there will be no more
script woo, no more music checks, no more. So much of me, so much of who i
am was created on that field, and in a single night, it all ends. there will
not be another time. All that i have put into that part of my life can never
be gotten back. friends were made on that field, enemies created, music played
to the ears of those willing to listen for the few moments of happiness it
brought the group. the countless times our feet hit the soft green grass of
the field in our shoes covered in the unforgetable spats or renown. the countless
cadences played to those willing to have a good time and just belong to a bigger
group and just jam. no more circles of close friends whammin away on the drum
head to the beat created by all for all to hear. no more cries of words of
excitement. no more chanting of random words to excite the crowd. no more "take
it backs". no more "cymbals FLARE!". no more ups. no more drive
or sly. the only remenants are those of the memories of all the above. the
friendships that will last until they fail, the thought of happiness kept until
faded away till nothing. most importantly, the legacy we left for the upcoming
classes and our names to be lost to the sands of time is only to be remembered
by the new rythms in the cadences, by the drills written and then recorded
by channel 22. there will only be the thought, the thought of what once was,
and will be for another person for us to share. there will only be then and
now. and nothing can change that.

I loved being in music. It was probably the best class I took (and the easiest...). Although it required occasional effort (concerts, taking care of the uniform, etc.) it was actually a fun experience. Having a class with a large group of friends was fun and we all shared something we had in common, music!!
